NOEL'S DEVON TEMPTERS

Noel Fowler, who moved to Devon from Leicester soon after his epic solo 24-hour run during Beaumont's Anniversary Relay in June, writes from his new home:

I have managed to catch my breath now, athough I am still spending quite a few days each week in Leicestershire because Sue is still working at Desford. Any way I have found a club to join, Teignbridge Trotters, and ran with them on a couple of nights so feel slightly settled.

Anyway in an attempt to persuade old frinds to come and visit I promised a list of events to try down here; so here is the start:

Templar 10, November 2nd; about 6 miles on road the rest fairly flat fields and tracks. Lovely run slightly short of 10 miles, starts and finishes at a pub! Entry form here: http://www.tamartrotters.co.uk/entry_forms/templer_ten_02-11-08.htm

Drogo 10, November 16th; all off orad with a very fast start and a killer hill at the end. Starts and fininishes at Castle Drogo a National Trust property providing some interest for the non runners whilst they wait. Entry form here: http://www.tamartrotters.co.uk/entry_forms/drogo_10_16-11-08.htm

Bicton Blister, November 30th; 11 or 5 miles multi-terrain. Entry form is here: http://www.bictonblister.co.uk/Blister_entry_form_08.pdf

Oh My Obelisk, January 11th 2009; a tough 11 miler climbing pretty continuously for 5 miles! then back down again. Starts and finishes from Dawlish Leisure Centre. Dawlish is a lovely seaside town on the main train line frm London. Entry form here: http://www.tamartrotters.co.uk/entry_forms/oh_my_obelisk_11-01-09_page_1.htm

Finally Exe to Axe, April 20th 2009; lovely walk/run along cliffs - 20 miles with transport provided. Organised by Sidmouth Runners whose website is here: http://www.sidmouthrunningclub.org.uk

If you don't want to race there are plenty of routes I can show you and lots of other stuff to do. We have spare bedrooms, with hotels, B&Bs and a campsite nearby.

Race for Life thanks Beaumont volunteers

Alison Nolan, Area Events Manager for Cancer Research UK wrote to us on 6th August (Web Janitor apologises for the delay in putting it on website) as follows:

Dear all at Beaumont Running Club:

A huge thank you to all that volunteered at the Leicester Race for Life at Western Park on 6th July, the weather was awful and you all did a fantastic job.

We can't run the events without the great work that volunteers do and we really appreciate all that you did on the day. We hope that those 5715 women and girls that took part in the Leicester Race for Life will raise approximately £400,000 to fund the vital research that our 4,250 scientists do which is fantastic.

We do appreciate the support that you have given over many years and thank you for what you are doing to help us gain support from other local running clubs in 2008

Plastic Bottle Hazard

Many people may be unaware of poisoning by re-using plastic bottles

Some of you may be in the habit of re-using your disposable mineral water bottles, keeping them in your car or at work. Not a good idea. In a nutshell the plastic (called polyethylene terephthalate or PET) used in these bottles contains a potentially carcinogenic element (something called diethylhydroxylamine or DEHA). The bottles are safe for one-time use only; if you must keep them longer, it should be no more than a few days, a week maximum. Keep them away from heat as well.

Repeated washing and rinsing can cause the plastic to break down and the carcinogens (cancer-causing chemical agents) can leach into the water that you are drinking. Better to invest in water bottles that are really meant for multiple use. This is not something that we should be scrimping on. Those of you with family - please advise them too, especially children.
